As qualifying wagers are recorded, the meter rises according to a configured increment formula. Not every cent of a wager goes to the jackpot; most of the mathematical return generally remains connected to base-game prizes.

The rules must disclose how the progressive prize is funded and identify its start-up seed and any ceiling. If the meter stops growing at a maximum amount, players should also be told how later contributions are handled.

A wide-area progressive extends that connection across multiple participating venues. The current GLI-12 standard describes a multi-site jackpot – also called a wide-area progressive – as a linked jackpot interconnected among multiple gaming venues.

Multi-Level Progressive Jackpots

Each level may use a different starting value, trigger, growth rate, or eligibility rule. Smaller prizes may be awarded more frequently, while the top level is designed as the rarest result.

The tiers can be triggered by collecting symbols, completing a bonus, landing a particular combination, or receiving a random award. IGT, for example, markets multi-level products with several jackpot levels and game-specific bonus mechanisms.

Players should check whether every level is progressive. Some lower tiers may be fixed prizes even when the highest award grows.

Mystery and Must-Hit-By Systems

A mystery progressive does not necessarily require an obvious reel combination. The system can award it randomly during an eligible play.

Some mystery jackpots use a hidden threshold between the reset amount and a stated ceiling. The system selects that threshold, and the prize is triggered when the meter reaches it.

GLI-12 states that mystery-triggered jackpots may use a random event or a randomly selected hidden trigger threshold. The threshold must be selected again after the initial start and each reset under the applicable system design.

A must-hit-by jackpot guarantees an award before a displayed maximum is exceeded, but it does not tell an individual player exactly when the hidden trigger will occur.

Eligibility and Bet Size

A player may see the jackpot meter without being eligible to win it. The game might require a particular minimum stake, side wager, denomination, or number of activated lines.

UK technical standards require ineligibility to be made clear. They also state that when customers contribute to the pool, they should be eligible while playing and that winning chances should increase in relation to the amount contributed.

GLI’s progressive-jackpot standard further addresses equivalent linked-jackpot odds across eligible games and denominations unless differences are clearly disclosed.

Never assume that selecting the highest possible bet is required. Read the rules before changing the stake.

Security, Randomness, and Jackpot Verification

A progressive system must accurately record meter changes, trigger events, configuration settings, and payouts. Strict access and logging controls help prevent unauthorized alterations to a live jackpot.

When an RNG controls the trigger, it should meet the applicable jurisdiction’s randomness requirements. GLI states that separate RNG implementations within a jackpot should be evaluated independently.

After a large win, the operator may review game logs and account information before completing payment. A verification step does not automatically indicate a problem, but its procedures should be transparent and consistent with the applicable rules.
